Aretha Thurmond top Washington finisher in Lausanne...

LAUSANNE, Switzerland--Former Renton High School and University of Washington standout Aretha Thurmond (left/photo by Paul Merca) finished sixth in the discus at the Athletissima meeting in the Swiss city Thursday night, as the Samsung Diamond League series of premier track & field meets continued its summer long run.

Thurmond threw 199-4 (60.77m), as Cuba's Yarelis Barrios took the victory with a mark of 216-3 (65.92m). US national champ Becky Breisch was second at 211-8 (64.53m), while reigning world champ Dani Samuels of Australia was third at 203-7 (62.05m).

In the current Samsung Diamond League standings in the discus, Thurmond currently is tied for third with 3 points along with Samuels. Barrios leads the Diamond League series with 8 points.

Another former Husky, Jordan Boase, who was a late add to the field after Usain Bolt opted to run the 100 meters, finished seventh in the 200 meter dash in a season best time of 20.79, as Walter Dix won his third straight Samsung Diamond League meet in 19.86.

The third former Husky in the meet, Ingvill Måkestad, finished tenth in the women's 1500, as she ran 4:07.41. Ethiopia's Gelete Burka won the race in a world leading time of 3:59.28.

Rainier Beach High grad Ginnie Powell Crawford, sporting a bandaged right knee, pulled up before the first hurdle and did not finish. Canada's Priscilla Lopes-Schliep was the winner in 12.56.

The Samsung Diamond League series moves on to Gateshead, England Saturday for the Aviva British Grand Prix. Vancouver's Kara Patterson, the three-time US national champ is matched up against Olympic champ Barbora Spotakova of the Czech Republic. Patterson defeated the Olympic champion and reigning world record holder last week at the Nike Prefontaine Classic.
