Bernard Lagat repeats as 1500m champion at Tangier

TANGIER, Morocco--Reigning world indoor 3000 meter champion and Washington State University hall of famer Bernard Lagat (center/photo courtesy Meeting International Tangier) won his second straight 1500 meter title at the Meeting International Tangier on Sunday.

In the meet hosted by friend and current world record holder in the 1500, Hicham El Guerrouj, Lagat hung on to win the race in a time of 3:36.89.

In the women's discus, Federal Way's Aretha Thurmond finished second behind Cuba's Yarelis Barrios, the current Samsung Diamond League leader in the event.

Barrios threw 206-6 (62.95m) for the victory, while Thurmond, the three time US Olympian out of the University of Washington spun the platter 194-5 (59.26m).

AROUND THE CIRCUIT--

At the Lignano Athletics Meeting Sunday in Lignano, Italy, former University of Washington sprinter Jordan Boase finished third in the 400 meters, running 46.80.

The IAAF World Junior Track & Field Championships begin Monday in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada.

Among athletes with Washington connections competing are both members of the USA men's javelin squad--University of Washington freshman Joe Zimmerman, and Tahoma HS star Derek Eager; Rainier Beach HS graduate Michael Berry on the USA 4 x 400m relay pool; former Curtis HS standout and current University of Kansas athlete Andrea Geubelle in the women's long and triple jumps; Canadian junior national high jump champ Holly Parent from Washington State University; and Washington State freshman Shawna Fermin in the 400 meter dash, representing Trinidad and Tobago.
