Märt Israel easily advances to discus finals at European Championships...

BARCELONA, Spain--Former University of Washington discus thrower Märt Israel (left/photo by Paul Merca) easily moved on to Sunday's finals with a fourth place finish in Group A of the European Championships at the Estadi Olimpic.

Israel, who was seeded fourth entering the European Championships, spun the platter 209-11 (63.99m) on his second attempt, beyond the automatic qualifying standard of 208-4 (63.50m), after a first round throw of 207-7 (63.27m).

Reigning world champion Robert Harting of Germany had the best toss in the two group qualifying round, with a throw of 219-7 (66.93m).

The finals of the men's discus will be held Sunday at 10:45 am, Seattle time (7:45 pm in Barcelona) as the European Championships conclude.
