UW frosh Joe Zimmerman earns fifth place finish at world juniors...

MONCTON, New Brunswick--With a personal-best, and UW freshman record throw of 244 feet and 10 inches (74.64m), Washington's Joe Zimmerman (left/photo by Paul Merca) took fifth place in the men's javelin at the IAAF World Junior Championships Friday in Moncton, New Brunswick.

Zimmerman, who finished fourth at the NCAA Championships this past spring, beat his previous personal best of 238-4 (72.65m), which he recorded at the U.S. Juniors this year.

German Till Wöschler earned the IAAF Junior title with a mark of 270-9 (82.52m), a meet record.

The Spokane native set his personal best in his fifth of six attempts. His 244-10 mark ranks No. 3 in Husky history, trailing only current teammate Kyle Nielsen (247-1/75.71m in 2010) and Darryl Roberson's school-record throw of 249-6 (76.05m), set back in 1986.

Highlights of the IAAF world junior championships are being shown on CBUT, the Vancouver, BC affiliate station of the Canadian Broadcasting Company (CBC).
