Estonian & former Husky Israel gets ninth in discus at European Championships...

BARCELONA, Spain--Former Washington Husky discus thrower Märt Israel (left/photo by Paul Merca) from Estonia finished a disappointing ninth in the finals of the European Championships at the Estadi Olimpic as the meet concluded Sunday.

Israel, who attended the University of Washington during the 2006-07 academic year, only managed to throw 205-4 (62.59m) in his lone fair mark of the competition, as he fouled his first and third attempts, missing the finals by nearly two feet.

Israel's mark Sunday was over four feet short of his Saturday qualifying mark of 209-11 (63.99m).

Poland's Piotr Malachowski set a European Championships meet record in winning the title with a toss of 225-11 (68.87m) in beating reigning world champion Robert Harting (224-7/68.47m) of Germany.
