Wells wins hammer at Cal St LA Twilight to highlight Viking efforts, plus busy day in Southern California...
Western Washington's Lindsay Wells (above/photo courtesy Western Washington University) won the women's hammer with a toss of 179-5 (54.70m) to highlight the Vikings' day at the Cal State LA Twilight Open meet at Jesse Owens Track on the campus of Cal State LA Thursday.
Wells' throw improves upon the school record that she set of 171-1 (52.16m) she set last month at the Club Northwest Spring Break open meet.
Wells actually broke her school record on her first attempt in Thursday's meet with a throw of 172-0 (52.42m), before unleashing her best mark in round two.
Her winning throw currently ranks Wells #10 on the current NCAA Division II performance list.
In the women's long jump, the Vikings' Tanja Bjornsson won with a best of 18-11 3/4 (5.78m) to turn back the challenge of Chantiel Harden of Cal State LA (18-8.5/5.70m).
Western's Alex Donigian, the GNAC indoor champion at both 60 and 200 meters, finished second in both the men's 100 and 200 dashes, running 10.50 and 21.73.
On the campus of Azusa Pacific in Azusa, Washington's Nick Pfeiffer finished eighth in the decathlon at the Mt SAC Relays, scoring 6840 points, as Akron's Alex McCune won with a final score of 7768 points.
In the concurrent California Invitational heptathlon, Seattle Pacific freshman Maddi Hommes was the Falcons' top finisher with a final two-day score of 4510 points to finish 24th overall.
Teammates Cheryl Hong (4073) and Ali Sowers (3744) finished 36th and 42nd overall, as Michigan's Aaron Howell won with a final score of 5362 points.
At the Mt SAC Relays distance carnival in Walnut late Thursday night, reigning USA club cross country champion Joe Gray, formerly from Lakewood before his move to Colorado, won in a time of 29:03.84, beating Iona's Matthew Gillespie by almost five seconds.
Washington State's Andrew Kimpel ran 29:41.06 to finish 17th, while teammate Drew Jordan finished in 29:49.39 to place 18th.
The Olympic Development section of the men's 10000 saw WSU's John Whelan finish ninth in a time of 29:54.72.
The men's open A section of the 10000 saw Gonzaga's Colin O'Neil finish 11th in 30:09.86
In the women's silver elite section of the 10000, Washington State's CharLee Linton was 13th in 35:17.29, the third fastest time in school history, as Arizona's Stephanie Bulder won in 34:35.63.
Eastern Washington's Cati Arrigoni finished second in the Open B section of the women's steeplechase.
Arrigoni finished in a time of 10:33.52, as Wyoming's Audra DeStefano won in 10:31.51.
