Seattle University's Shaddye Melu finishes seventh in heat of 400 at world juniors...

EUGENE--Seattle University junior Shaddye Melu (left/photo courtesy Chad Pharis, Seattle University) finished seventh in his heat of the men's 400 meters as the IAAF World Junior Track & Field Championships opened at Historic Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon.

Competing in the fifth of seven heats, Melu, a graduate of Auburn Mountainview HS representing Zambia, finished in a time of 48.74, the 39th fastest time of the day.

Tyler Brown of Team USA won the heat in 46.45, the second fastest time of the day.

The top three in each heat plus the three fastest times advanced to Wednesday's semifinals.


No Washington athletes will be in action Wednesday.  The University of Washington's Amy-Eloise Neale (Great Britain) and Eastern Washington University's Paula Gil-Echevarria (Spain) will run in the 3000 steeplechase Thursday morning at 10:05 am.
