Western's Frank Catelli transfers to the University of Washington...

The University of Washington announced in a release that Western Washington shot/discus standout Frank Catelli (left/photo courtesy Western Washington University) is taking his talents to Montlake.

Catelli, a native of Sequim, finished third in the NCAA Division II championships in late May in Allendale, Michigan, throwing the shot 60-10 1/2 (18.55m), which was the Great Northwest Athletic Conference and Western Washington school record.

He also qualified for the NCAA championships in the discus, where he finished 13th with a best of 168-3 (51.29m).  He had a season best of 173-11 (53.00m), set in winning the Washington Open in April.

"Frank brings us immediate help at not only the Pac-12 level, but at the National level as well," said Husky throws coach TJ Crater. "He has worked hard to get his results, but he has a lot of room to continue to grow. I have been fortunate to work with some great collegiate throwers, and I think Frank could rise to that level. We are excited to put him into the mix and I hope he will become a catalyst for our young, talented men's throws group."

Thursday, Vancouver native Kara Patterson and University of Washington alum Brad Walker will compete in the Lausanne stop of the IAAF Diamond League circuit, the Athletissima Meeting at Stade Olympique de la Pontaise.

Patterson is coming off a victory in the USA outdoor championships, where she took her fifth national title in the javelin, while Walker looks to rebound after a disappointing fifth place finish in the pole vault at nationals in Sacramento.

Patterson will compete against a field that includes current IAAF Diamond League points leader Martina Ratej of Slovenia, and reigning Olympic champ Barbora Spotakova of the Czech Republic.

Walker jumps against reigning world and Olympic champ Renaud Lavillenie of France, who is the current IAAF Diamond League leader, along with Malte Mohr of Germany, Konstantinos Filippidis of Greece, and training partner Steve Lewis of Great Britain, who works with Walker in his Phoenix-area training base.
