Watson a double winner for Vikings on day 1 of GNAC championship meet...

MONMOUTH, Oregon—Western Washington’s Brett Watson (above/photo courtesy Western Washington University) was a double winner as day 1 of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference meet at McArthur Field on the campus of Western Oregon University.

Watson won the long jump with a mark of 24-1.75 (7.36m), which was aided by a 2.7mps wind.  He then won his third GNAC high jump crown with a first attempt clearance of 6-7 (2.01m).

In other day 1 action:

Western Washington’s Katelyn Steen won the 3000 steeplechase in a time of 10:14.16 over Central Washington’s Dani Eggleston (10:31.65), and Seattle Pacific’s Jessica Rawlins (10:55.10).

Seattle Pacific’s Michaella Kahns was an upset winner in the pole vault, clearing 11-9.75 (3.60m) over Central Washington’s McKenna Emmert and Western Washington’s Anna Paradee, both of whom cleared 11-5.75 (3.50m).

The Falcons’ Kyra Brannan (18-4.5/5.60m) led a 1-3-5 finish in the long jump, with Maliea Luquin (18-3/5.56m), and Tasia Baldwin (17-10.75/5.45m) following.

SPU’s Anna Patti (37:00.02) won the women’s 10000 by over 13 seconds over Amy Johnston (37:13.34) of Alaska-Anchorage.

Ryan Macdonald of Western Washington won the men’s discus with a toss of 166-1 (50.63m).

Seattle Pacific has a 57-49 advantage over Alaska Anchorage, with Central Washington (41) and Western Washington (40) after the first day in the women’s race.

Western Washington leads the men’s competition with 72 points over Alaska Anchorage, with Central Washington in third with 38 and Saint Martin’s in fifth with 31.



At the Oregon Twilight meet in Eugene, Auburn/Riverside alum Jordan McNamara finished third in the 1000 meter run in a time of 2:21.40, as McNamara's Nike/OTC teammate Mac Fleet won in 2:21.25.

Washington State alum Joe Abbott (1:49.68) was third in the men's 800, as Matthew Centrowitz (1:48.46) of the Nike Oregon Project took the win.

In the men's 3000, Bellingham native Chris Kwiatkowski (8:17.27) was third, while Mt. Spokane HS senior John Dressel (8:20.58) was seventh.

The highlight of the meet was Oregon prep Matthew Maton (Summit HS/Bend) becoming the sixth high schooler in American history to break 4 minutes in the mile, as he ran 3:59.38.
