Gil-Echevarria 12th in heat of women's steeple at European U-23s...

TALLINN, Estonia—Eastern Washington University rising junior Paula Gil-Echevarria (left/photo by Paul Merca) finished 12th in her heat of the women’s 3000 steeplechase Thursday at the European Athletics Under-23 Championships at Kadriorg Stadium.

The race started off under a driving rainstorm which eased up as the race progressed.  The third place finisher for the Eagles at the Big Sky championship meet could not latch herself to the lead group, and was out of contention, running 10:31.65.  

Yekaterina Ivonina of Russia won the heat in 9:58.13, as the top eight finishers in the heat qualified for Saturday’s finals.


In some results that we missed on Wednesday night, Garrett Heath of the Seattle-based Brooks Beasts finished third in the 1500 meters iat the Miting Internacional d’Atletisme in Barcelona, running 3:36.62, as Hillary Maiyo of Kenya won in 3:35.20.

Auburn/Riverside HS alum Jordan McNamara was 18th in 3:43.62.


Pasco native Marisa Howard will compete in the finals of the women’s 3000 steeplechase Friday night at the World University Games in Gwangiu, South Korea.
