Happy day for the Wingers as Kara and Russ take NACAC titles...
SAN JOSE, Costa Rica—It was a happy day for the Wingers, as Vancouver native Kara Winger (left/photo by Paul Merca) won the javelin competition at the NACAC senior championships in the Costa Rican city Friday.
After a first round foul, the two-time US Olympian and American record holder in the event launched the spear 192-1 (58.55m) in round 2 to take command. In round six, she extended her lead with her best throw of the day, at 197-11 (60.34m).
Husband Russ also ended up on the top spot on the podium, as the University of Idaho alum won the discus with a throw of 199-1 (60.68m).
With the win, Russ officially earned his spot to compete in this month’s IAAF world championships in Beijing, as thanks to a new IAAF provision, regional champions are granted the standard for qualification to the world championships. While Russ finished second at nationals, he did not have the qualifying standard of 213-3 (65.00m) to go to Beijing.
Reigning Pac-12 400 meter champion Marcus Chambers of Tacoma ran 45.96 to finish third in his heat and did not make the finals, which potentially could take the Oregon rising junior out of consideration by the USA coaching staff to go to Beijing as part of the 4 x 400 relay pool, despite his sixth place finish in June at the USA championships.
Saturday, University of Washington alum Brad Walker will compete in the finals of the men’s pole vault.
