UW's Josh Gordon stands third in Pac-12 decathlon; WSU's Harper second in heptathlon at the break...

SEATTLE—Washington’s Josh Gordon (left/photo by Howard Lao) put himself in prime position for a podium finish after the first day of competition at the Pac-12 Multi Events championships at Husky Track Saturday.

The sophomore ended day one with a five-event total of 3922 points, 103 points behind defending champion Pau Tonnesen of the University of Arizona, who is the only one over 4000 points at 4025.

Gordon started the day by running 11.14 in the 100 meters, then won the long jump with a mark of 24-3.5 (7.40m), worth 910 points.

He lost a little ground in the shot put, with a toss of 37-2.5 (11.34m), then rebounded with a high jump of 6-4.25 (1.94m).  Gordon won his section of the 400, running a personal best of 48.87.

Washington State’s Dino Dodig stands fourth with a five-event score of 3909 points, while UW’S Cole Jensen is fifth at the break with 3832 points.

In the heptathlon, an expected duel between the last two Pac-12 champions, Alissa Brooks-Johnson of Washington State, and Amalie Iuel of USC never materialized, as Brooks-Johnson didn’t make it to Seattle, as the back injury she suffered at the Mt. SAC multi-event meet kept her from defending her title.

Iuel, the 2014 champion, leads at the break with a four-event score of 3709 points, with Washington State’s Liz Harper second at 3495 points.

Harper’s day included a 13.81 clocking in the 100 hurdles, a 5-11.25 (1.81m) high jump, a toss of 35-1.75 (10.71m) in the shot put, and a 24.61 in the 200 meters.

Washington’s CJ Smith stands ninth at the break with 3008 points, while freshman Lindsey Schamble  is 11th with 2735 points after four events.

The meet resumes Sunday at 10:30 am with the decathlon 110 hurdles, while the women get started at 11:45 with the long jump.
